Collaborative Consumption
(2024)
This thesis investigates the driving factors that influence consumer adoption of collaborative consumption models, specifically product rental and secondhand purchase of consumer durables. It aims to identify the differences and similarities between the two concepts, and to gain further insight into the factors that influence consumers' intentions to engage in secondhand purchasing and rental of consumer durables. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior, the thesis contributes to the understanding of how the importance of ownership, trend affinity and the desire for flexibility influence consumers' attitudes and subsequently their intention to buy secondhand or rent. This was done by conducting a comparative analysis of the two concepts by using linear and multiple regression models. In addition, a repeated measures ANOVA assesses the variance in consumer attitudes towards secondhand purchase and renting across different categories of consumer durables. This research confirms that attitudes towards product rental and secondhand purchase significantly impact consumer intentions. Trend affinity plays a contrasting role, positively influencing attitudes towards renting but not towards buying secondhand. Furthermore, product category acts as a moderating factor, influencing the relationship between trend affinity, ownership importance and consumer attitudes in product rental but not in buying secondhand. The findings suggest that secondhand purchase is already widely adopted, while there is still potential to increase the adoption of rental options for consumer durables. Therefore, the thesis not only provides information on the role of the identified influencing factors on consumer adoption, but also provides insights for marketers to tailor strategies that promote the adoption of collaborative consumption models.
