Knowledge management has already been discussed in business literature for several decades, but there are still only a few organizations, which manage their most valuable asset accordingly. The internet is full of pitfalls and mistakes regarding knowledge management initiatives, due to a strong emphasis on IT based knowledge management systems. Especially when acting in today’s dynamic business environment and whenever operating globally, the need for knowledge sharing based on IT tools rises, as personalization approaches can no longer be applied successfully in organizations of a certain scale. Since knowledge management as a basic discipline is essential for an organization to be successful in the global market, this thesis aims to find out, which factors must be considered to successfully implement and run an IT based knowledge base. It should also show additional benefits on how the knowledge base can create a further advantage for an organization by triggering innovation potentials. Therefore, a broad literature review on knowledge management and innovation was conducted to point out influencing factors for a successful implementation and a beneficial use of an IT based knowledge base. Furthermore, an overview of types of innovation and best practices examples is provided, where knowledge bases are already acting as a trigger for innovation. Subsequently a knowledge base is conceptualized for the business case of an internationally operating intralogistics software provider, which is checked for applicability by experts in several interviews. The focus hereby is not only on the increase of efficiency concerning operations, but the identification of innovation potential derived directly from the knowledge base. By describing a collaborative platform for the organization, the weakest link in knowledge management, namely the link between IT tools and employees should be improved. The introduction of an overarching knowledge base will trigger a cultural change within the company thus confirming the research results, which illustrate a wide variety of organizational framework conditions to guarantee the success of such a knowledge platform. Therefore, the recommended actions state that the support by the top management team has to be ensured and that prior to the implementation the organizational definitions and decisions need to be recorded and communicated clearly to all the persons concerned. The lack of such organizational framework conditions inevitably results in a failure of the tool itself. If, on the contrary, these organizational framework conditions are addressed correctly, the knowledgebase can generate an immeasurable value for the company, which will lead to the long-term success of the organization.
