  • New technologies have changed the software development process for DCS (Distributed Control Systems) throughout the last decade. Engineering and testing processes can be performed more efficiently and cost effectively than in the past. A suitable approach to increase the efficiency of these processes is the implementation of “digital twins” which represent digital models of existing process plants or production lines. Metior Industrieanlagen develops software solutions for Siemens PCS7 DCS which accurate performance needs to be validated by a FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) executed in collaboration with the client. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate how the execution of such a FAT process can be enhanced by the implementation of a digital twin based on the Siemens Simulation Framework SIMIT. First the basic requirements of digital twins were investigated. The assessed data was utilized to develop a plant simulation model of a small process facility including widespread equipment as for example pumps and valves. A standardized application program based on Siemens PCS7 containing Control Module Types (CMT) and the according logic in SIMIT was set up especially for this simulation plant referring to a functional design specification. Afterwards a fully operational plant simulation was generated and the impact on the FAT process in comparison to the current performed FAT at metior Industrieanlagen was evaluated. Based on the results of this simulation, the implementation of a digital twin for a FAT can be thoroughly recommended due to time and cost effectiveness. Furthermore this thesis represents a guideline how to apply standardized DCS programs and simulation methods for future software projects.
